Mr. Massaroni was a dear associate of mine. I can remember the first day I met him at a S.w.A.T. class for Shin Karate back in 93'. We were promoted through the ranks around the same time and shared a competitiveness in tournaments throughout the 1990's and into the new millenium. My recent memories of him were how we shared conducting the region 8 Black belt exams together. Boy, he was the best. And he was married alomost 1 year to the day after my wedding. I know his family and in laws well and my prayers and love go out to them and the entire Black Belt Academy population. We love ya' Rob!!! Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord. When anybody thinks of Mr. Massaroni, there is not one negative thing to be said. He genuinely was one of a kind. I cannot claim to have known him as well as others, but I do know that in the few interactions that I've had with him, it was plain to see the outstanding quality of a human being that he was. To watch him perform, he made everything seem so effortless - yet at the same time, you could tell that he trained as hard as anybody. He will truly be missed, yet will continue to be a beacon of inspiration to all. My prayers and sincerest condolences goes out to his friends, family, and loved ones. I will miss Rob tremendously - he was a great man, a great friend, a great martial artist, and a great competitor. We traded blows in the ring many, many times, and even traded some championships at some of the smaller tournaments, but win or lose, Rob always had a smile and a kind word for me, and everyone else as well. Rob did everything well that I ever saw him do, without even a trace of the ego that so many of the rest of us develop. I only wish I could have seen him formally receive his master's belt. He truly earned the right to be addressed as "Master Massroni". My thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, and his students at this time. To Rob's Mom & Dad: you always treated me extremely well, and I know it is your example that made Rob such a wonderful person to be around. I still can't believe that he is gone. It finally hit me though as soon as I walked off of the bus this morning. EVERY morning you would say good morning to me and now I'm never going to hear that or see your smiling face to brighten up my day. I remember the first day of seventh grade when I walked into your classroom. You were nervous but at the same time very eager to start teaching a new group of students. Of course you quickly saw the resemblance between my sister and I! I remember how you would always be able to catch a kid chewing gum regardless if it was obvious or not. I was always cautious to chew gum in your class. You could always make people laugh and put a smile on their face. I must admit that you were my favorite 7th grade teacher. Too bad I had to leave and join the GT classes in the middle of the year but for the time that I had you, it was a very enjoyable time. It's hard to believe that I won't be able to see you every school day. NO more cheerful smiles in the hallway while walking to sunny side-up, no more friendly waves in the morning, NO more help from getting beat up by my brother, and most of all NO more support and motivation to do well in school. Even though you're gone, you will NEVER be forgotten. I guess it's true what they say...only the good die young...Rest In Peace Mr. Mass...we will ALWAYS remember you ~Alexia Ewing

I don't know. I guess I'm still in as much shock as everyone else is. Mr.Mass, you were my teacher, you were my leader, and you were my friend. I never passed history class until I got to your class. I got mostly straight A's, and I learned a lot. The day of the race, I saw you a little infront of me when we were running. It was about the 5th mile. Little did i know that would be that last time I saw you. I really can't believe that your gone. It just seems impossible. You were a loving, caring man, who always had a smile, always seemed happy, and could always make you laugh. You are the perfect idol. I really will miss you. I have known Rob for almost 10 years, he has been my daughters teacher and friend. But to me he was much more than that, he was a friend, teacher, mentor, and a family member! Rob was so much to so many, he touched my life like no other has! He has helped me become closer to my daughter and he brought my little shy girl out of her shell and made her the beautiful woman she is today! He took her from white belt to 2nd degree black belt, and helped her with her school work and now she is a straight A student! Thanks to Rob we are a closer family! I used to go to Rob and ask him what to do to make my relationship better not only with my daughter but with all 3 of my children and he sat and talked to me and gave me advise that worked for me. You will never know how much Rob has helped me nd now I can't even tell him how Thankful I am for that, and for him being a friend! He was like my family and I will never forget him! To Mr. & Mrs. Massaroni and his wife Val, I'm truly sorry for your loss and want you to know your not alone in your sorrow! =( I loved Rob like a little brother and I know that Christina cared about him and loved him like another brother! He will be missed but NOT FORGOTTEN!!! Rob, RIP and keep us all safe by watching over us all. To Val and the rest of Rob's family, PLEASE call me if I can do ANYTHING day or night. I first met Rob 15 years ago when my son Chris joined Black Belt Academy. My first impression was, "what a fine young gentleman". Over the years, I've seen Rob grow into the great competitor, devoted son, man, husband, and teacher that he has become. I've had the extreme pleasure of becoming his student and team member on the great experience of the Black Belt Academy Demo Team. I always admired how hard Rob trained, but even more for how he made time to help others. He won with grace, and when he lost is was with class and sportsmanship. Our hearts go out to the Massaroni's and his wife Val. I cannot comprehend how you are all feeling. To Master Gordon, who mentored Rob into one of the finest men that I know, my sympathies are with you sir. To the extended Black Belt Academy family, please grieve as you should, but take heart in the many, many lives that Rob has made better by being a part of ours. Please keep the candle burning, that's what Rob would do... God Bless, Gary Tretina

As I heard the horrible news today numbness runs through my mind and body. It was only a few short weeks ago that we shared a room together at the Masters clinic in Alabama. I had the opportunity to share Rob's mixture of emotion, a few hours before his Master's test. Rob, I would like you to know, that knowledge and wisdom is in your mind, heart, and soul. Tang Soo Do is who you are. You were a Master before you even tested. You had your masters belt all along, you just wore it on the inside, the belt is just material. I was glad to know you all these years as a friend and fellow martial artist. You treated ever day like a holiday and every meal like a feast, you live life to the fulliest, not everyone can say that. It was an honor to train with you, an honor to watch you compete, an honor to be invited to your wedding. To Rob's wife Val, brother Chris, and his mom and dad my deepest regrets. we all loved Rob!!!! He was truly one of the good guys. I will always keep you in my heart and will never forget the times together. your friend, Master Michael DiPietro

I knew Rob for a few years at Temple University. In addition to having some mutual friends, we took an aikido class together, and we were partnered up for our 8th kyu (orange belt) test. As a martial artist myself, I developed a great respect for him, a 1st degree black belt at the time. And he was a great guy... friendly, funny, and he had a sense of honor. I heard about his death this morning on Preston & Steve's morning show on 93.3 WMMR, and I was hoping they were talking about a different Rob Massaroni. But when they mentioned he had a 4th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, was a teacher, and taught in Bensalem, I knew that they were talking about my old college pal. I express my deepest sympathies to his wife, his family, and to all his students, both his public school students and his tang soo do students. I only caught a glimpse of the man compared to what they have touched, and what they have now lost. -Raj Mahabir

Please take the time to pass on what he meant (and gave to us every day) and impart it to every one you meet - his patience, kindness, fierce competivenes, compassion, humility, encouragement, determination, and enthusiasm for LIFE. We are lucky to have known him. This is his legacy. Tang Soo, Sir!

In all honesty, I still cannot believe that this has happened. I met Rob fifteen years ago and he helped me through some of the toughest times in my life and was my best friend for quite awhile. It is such a tragedy that this is happened, and I can't describe it any other way. My heartfelt condolences go out to Val, Rob's family, friends, and students. The world lost a true gentleman and exemplary person on Sunday.  Rob, let it be known that we all will try to follow your way of life: train as hard as you can, be the best that you can be, coach others to fulfill their dreams and ambitions, and love everyone while doing it. Tang Soo, Master Massaroni!

My memories of Rob take me back to when he first starting out in the WTSDA family. His dedication, humbleness, and kindness made it evident even back then that there was something special about him. He was taken far too soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. May God comfort and strenthen you all during this difficult time. - Deb Tuitt Richards

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to Val, Barb, Roland, Chris, Kim, Master Gordon and all of Rob’s many, many friends and students. Rob Massaroni was a true and kind gentleman! He led by example and demonstrated how great a man could be, regardless of the amount of years on this earth. His smile truly lit up a room and he always had a kind word for someone when they needed it. Rob seemed to know instinctively when someone needed that kind word. I thank you Rob for mentoring my children and my husband in the martial arts and in life. Your family can be so very proud of the ideal life that you led. You are missed Master Massaroni. I first met Master Massaroni 11 years ago. I mostly saw him at tournaments and remember him as the kid who psyched himself up with music before his matches or who was whipping a bong around. Since then I've had the privilege to train with him. I was always impressed by both his ability (due to much hard work and dedication) and his humility. He wanted not only to be good, but to raise others to his level. I'm so thankful for the privilege to have known him. My prayers are with all of us who will miss him. Tang Soo. Rochelle Fernands

When my wife called and told me what had happened I was floored. I sit here now not knowing what to write. How can you put into words to describe a man who had such an impact on so many lives. It has been 8 years since I last trained with Rob. The one thing that comes to mind when I think about training with him was his smile. His smile was infectious and you couldn't help to smile with him even when doing 300 center punchs. He embodied and lived the 7 tennents. But the one that stands out the most is humility. Rob was an excellent technician but he never let his ego get in the way even when many of us have. My wife and I send our condolences to the Massaroni family. Cha Rut. Sah Bum Nim E Kyung Yet. When I was told that Mr. Mass was gone I was in shock and my whole body was numb. I couldn't believe it, I didn't want to believe it. I'm still in denial about it. He was the biggest role model I had and the person I always looked up to the most. Ever since I joined karate when I was 7, I always told myself that one day I was going to be like Mr. Massaroni. I was determined to make it happen. He always helped me through hard times, whether it had to do with karate, school, family or even friends. I thought of him as though he were another brother to me. He was always in a good mood no matter what. He lit up the room just by walking in. I still can't believe I'll never get to see him again. Whenever someone would tell me something in karate I wouldn't believe them until I heard it from Mr. Mass. I always looked forward to seeing him there. Ok, so I had my days when I really didn't want to go to karate, but I always ended up leaving the karate school with a smile on my face. At one point I even wanted to quit karate for a while, but I stuck to it because I knew Mr. Mass had faith in me and as long as he taught me and helped me I would make it. I even doubted myself at the hardest times, but Mr. Mass always brought me out and boosted my confidence so I wouldn't give up. He helped me go from a shy white belt, to an outgoing black belt. He's taught me more in life than just karate and I wish I could have thanked him for it. I wish he never left. I will always miss him. R.I.P. Mr. Mass ~Christina Kukawski~

Mr. Massaroni was one of the first competitors I ever watched at a Region 8 Tang Soo Do championship event in PA, years ago, when I was a brand new 10th Gup. I remember seeing him compete that day; I remember his grace, his strength, and his fierce competitiveness, which at the end of his performance, was capped off by a smile. Automatically, he became a positive representation for me of everything Tang Soo Do, and has remained so to this day. He and his memory are something I will continue to carry with me, as I further my own training, and also that of my students and their families. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Massaroni family, as well as to all of those he loved and who loved him in return. Kristan Mack, Capitol Tang Soo Do, Arlington, VA

I still cannot comprehend it. The tears don't want to stop. He was the definition of a gentleman, a man of the highest breeding. He was a role model to all ages. He had grace, talent, and knowledge. He had charisma, energy and infectious optimism. He was dedicated, a hard-worker, always looking for ways to increase his knowledge and improve himself. He was kind, warm, and always there. He worked hard to be the best he could be and inspired others to do the same. He touched an infinite number of lives in such a positive way. He was one of a kind. A good soul. Irreplaceable. Rob, What a stunning, depressing shock? You were loved by many people, and will remain in the hearts of many more. Its hard to fathom a childhood memory and not have a vision of “us” burn throughout my thoughts. You were my best friend, and the brother an only child never had. I’ll never forgot the laughs and life highs we shared...you, me, C, butchie and trotta, pretty much inseperable. As all family members have their trials and tribulations, they have their basis for trust and love deep within. I hope, and pray sincerely, that you are in a better place. Your brief time was obviously more than enough to leave your mark on the lives of many. If it was not for you, I would have never reached personal goals that we conquered together. You always were in my thoughts, I hope you knew that Rob. To Mr. And Mrs. Massaroni, Chris and other family members and loved ones, I, along with the Knowles family, send our deepest regrets. - Ryan Knowles

We were all just together laughing and joking at the Masters clinic. Hugging and saying "see you back home at Dan testing". I can't get your smiling face out of my mind,as many others have expressed also. Maybe it's because you are trying to comfort and support us now,as you did in life. Mr. Massaroni better known as Mr. Mass, there are not enough words to express the sadness felt by his passing. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. We have had the pleasure of him touching the lives of 3 of our children, one as a karate instructor and one as a teacher at Shafer. Even our 3 year old could not wait to go to karate with her big brother and show Mr. Mass her karate kicks. Our children valued what Mr. Mass had to teach. Not only the fundamentals of karate and school but what it means to be an honorable, caring person. He may be gone in body but his spirit and energy will forever grace Black Belt Academy and Shafer Middle School. He will live on in the children whose lives he enriched. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family. We miss you. The Mayberry Family

In the short 5 months during which our son Robbie has been taking classes @ BBA, the impact karate lessons and Mr. Mass in particular, has been tremendous. Robbie has ADHD, which has been managed, not with medication, but with structure, consistency and loving guidance. The need to focus, be still and strive to do your best in Tong Soo Do has had an impact on his behavior at home and at school. Mr. Mass could get Robbie to settle down with just a word or a glance. Robbie thought that it was WAY COOL that they had the same name!!!I pray for comfort and healing for Rob's family - know that he is in the house of the Lord. Gene, Donna, and Robbie(Hughes) Walter.

Mr. Massaroni "Mr. Mass" will truely be missed by all. He touched the lives of many children and families. For the past three years Mr. Mass has taught my summer camp children karate. The kids looked forward to it every summer. I was shocked, as all were, by the news on Monday morning. He was an all around genuine person and a great role model for all of his students. He will stay forever in our hearts. He is one of the great ones! My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family. God bless you and R.I.P! Love, Candice Wistner

Mr. Mass was a teacher that touched my daughter Paige Rakoczy (age 13) in a powerful way. He helped her when she needed a little push. She has an empty part of heart now and she may never forget him, and she has suffered a loss no greater then anything that has ever happened to her in these few years of her life. I am not sure how my daughter will get by each day at school without Mr. Mass. I pray his spirit remains in the school! Thank you for this website for the kids to write their thoughts. Massaroni was a special, unique, and extremely talented person. I knew him from his visits to East Coast Karate Institute. He was a pleasant person to be around. I can only give his family my deepest condolences over this terrible tragedy. He will be missed by the lives of those he has touched. paul fricker

Mr. Gordon: I know that it's been quite a while since you've heard from me or since we've seen each other. I heard about the news of Rob Massaroni and I wanted to offer my sincerest and deepest condolences for his loss. My girlfriend had told me that she heard news about a runner who collapsed right after crossing the finish line on Sunday in the Broad Street run. We are going to be participating in the Susan Komen "Race for the Cure" for breast cancer on Mother's Day, and she thought it was ironic (and a bit scary) how the person who collapsed on Sunday was a martial artist in their 20s just like me. As soon as I heard it was a 29 year old martial artist, I began to wonder if there was some chance that I had known them, but wasn't sure how probable that would be. This morning, my mother e-mailed me a copy of the article because she recognized Rob's name and asked me if I knew him. When I found out it was Rob Massaroni, I was incredibly shocked and I actually felt my blood run cold knowing that is was a fellow Tang Soo Do practitioner. I remember Rob from competing in various regional and world championship tournaments while I was at Shin Karate in Philadelphia. He was an incredibly nice guy and a great competitor. He always seemed to get along with everyone and he really had his heart in Tang Soo Do. It's absolutely baffling how the unexpected can happen in life. After reading the article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, I immediately went to the web site for "Nate Gordon's Black Belt Academy." The powerpoint tribute to Rob is wonderful and I'm sure that he is greatly missed. Again, I am greatly sorry for Rob's loss and may he rest in peace. Tang Soo. -Chris Conolly

Words fail miserably at a time like this, but I would like to try to express my feelings about Rob, and how I believe he effected the people around him. My first memories of Rob are from his early days of competition. I remember him winning the Grand Championship trophy at my Winter Tournament years ago. It may have been the first grand trophy he got from competition. I remember him winning that trophy and many others, but most of all I remember what a great Champion he was; how he carried himself, and how he demonstrated humility. Over the years Rob has placed at the top of many events that I recall, but through all of his success Rob stayed grounded, and was never the one to boast, or to have the wrong attitude. I have always admired Rob for his great skill, but most of all I admired how he walked his martial art path. When someone like Rob who leaves us so young and full of life, we all feel the loss personally, and we grieve for those friends and loved ones he leaves behind. It first comes to mind that Rob was taken too soon, but I like to think, even though his life was cut so short, that Rob lived a full, and usefull life. The testimonals from his students and friends give credit to the many lives Rob effected in a very positive way. Master Massaroni died while reaching for perfection, while pushing himself to be the best he could be. Though we are all deminished a little by his death, I believe we owe it to him and his memory to recognize that his passing, just after he reached the finish line of a very tough race, was a very honorable and worthy way for him to say goodby. Master Chuck Vaughn

When my husband called to tell me the news, I was speechless and numb. Our family is part of the Region 8 WTSDA family. My husband, Rick, started karate about the same time Rob did. Through tournaments and camps, we were fortunate to see Rob grow into the incredible role model he was. Rob was a quiet champion and an incredible and gracious loser. His integrity, committment, loyalty and friendship are few of the qualities that set him above others. As a mom of 2 Black Belt boys, there would not be any other choice of a role model I would choose my boys to emulate. He will be missed dearly. I feel that myself and my family are blessed and lucky to have been touched by Rob and his family. My husband was thrilled to test with Rob in March for their Master's Belts together and will miss him at the promotions. Rob was always a master in his heart and through his actions. Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends and thanks for sharing such a beautiful person with our world. The Harsche's-Rick, Anita, Ryan and Bradley

Words cannot express the loss that all of us feel with the passing of Rob. I’ve known Rob now for about 18 years, crazy how time passes. The best memories with Rob progressing through the ranks would have been towards the end of my martial arts career, when I was diagnosed with a degenerative brain disorder. Master Gordon and Rob both took the time to meet with me, discuss my options in training and learn about my disorder. Although my limitations were great; they arranged the class so that I could participate. When I wanted to join in the ranks in the back of the room so that I didn’t slow anyone else down, they both insisted that I stand in line where I should have been. Often, Rob would partner with me, not only because of rank, but so that I would feel comfortable with my disability. He bent over backwards to give me inspiration and hope, and be a guiding star to follow. Even now, in his passing, he has reminded me once again the importance of living life to your fullest potential, shooting for the stars, achieving your dreams and living without any regrets. --- Tonya McCabe

When I first heard about MR. Mass, I thought somebody somewhere had made a terrible mistake. Once it was confirmed to be true, I felt as though I could never return to my studio and continue to train without him there. After visiting the studio yesterday, I felt his presence and realized he would always be right there with us always and something made me feel as though everything was going to be alright. I have never idolized any stars or profesional athletes. Mr Mass was my only Idol, my only hero, my mentor and my freind. He was a man that few others could compare to and I feel honored to have had him in my life. His legacy will live on in those whom he has inspired and those who loved him. R.I.P. I only had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Mass for about a year at the Black Belt Academy. I stopped going to karate in the end of March of this year. He taught me so much, from a simple front kick, to the first four forms. He never seemed like a person who could die. It's good to know that he went out of this world the way he lived in this world, trying his best and pursuing at what he was doing. I am sure that his soul is in God's loving care for all of the people he has helped and taught over the years. Mr. Massaroni, I salute you, where ever your soul may be. ~~Jeanette Leh May 9, 2007

I actually knew what he meant and was teaching. Its crazy thats hes gone because i've seen him for broadstreet practice all three years, cause now im in 9th grade, and he was always high fiving kids or encouraging them. I always thought it was amazing how athletic he was. I am still honestly shocked and tears come to my eyes when i think of him because i saw him that sinday morning, pumped and happy, just like all of us. They say you don't really know how much a person has affected you until they are no longer here. I have known Master Massaroni for the past 10 years, he was one of the first people to help push me to my limits and beyond. He was a great leader among not only the martial arts society, but the entire world. For every person that he has affected positively, it has been passed on to someone else. I for sure have shared some of his insights with people from around the world and do believe that if we had more people like Master Massaroni, this world would be a better place. My name is, Dennis Mc Gowan, and I am a student at Godwin Shin Karate in Trenton, N.J. When I first signedup my nephew, David Shinn, and then myself in 1992, I first saw Master Massaroni, who at the time was a teenager and part of the demonstration team doing a demo during a tournament in Phila. Pa. I was very impressed with the skill, enthusiasm, and dedication that he and the other students displayed in doing their dive rolls, over and under, and Thought to myself,"this student will be someone to watch through the coming years." I watched him through the years, he turned out to be a superb athlete and truely became a mentor and inspiration to all who knew him, especially the young students. When I heard his name called at various Championships , and saw him run up to the front to receive the top trophy, and heard the applause,I knew that I was right. I would like to express my condolences to his family, and also his Tang Soo Do Family, especially his young students, For I know that he will be eternally missed.

Rob was such a great friend to me - I was able to go to a Black Belt camp in Pennsylvania and he befriended me as soon as I arrived. He sparked our friendship and took care of me the entire weekend. I will not forget the kindness he showed me and the good times we shared, how few they were. I remember him coming through the Masters Clinic as well and he always had a smile on his face and a cheerful attitude, no matter how late it was and how tired he felt. He will be very missed but know that his spirit will continue to live on forever. I cant believe that something like this could have happened to such a good person. Master Massaroni will always be Mr. Mass to me and will live in my memory forever. Mr. Mass loved his students he loved my son Kyle and in turn he was beloved by all. I first learned Mr. Mass was a special person when Kyle while testing, was unable to break his board and began to cry as he walked away dejected. Still crying when testing was over Mr. Mass asked Kyle to come over and try again. This time the board broke and Kyle's tears were gone and his smile was as big as I had ever seen. That is the moment I knew that Mr. Mass was a special person! He was passionate about life, Tang Soo Do, his students and his family. He has had a profound impact on our family and I entrusted him with what I hold most precious in life, my son! I will miss our talks, your smile, your passion for Tang So Doo. However, I promise you that Kyle along with Maggie, Bell and Sean will be your first group of little dragons that attain the goal of being a Black Belt. I can only hope and pray that Kyle has the same moral fiber and fortitude in living his life as you did in yours. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to get to know you and for instilling in my son the desire to be a champion. - Greg Leon

In Rob there was such genuine niceness and caring for and about others. In my mind's eye I see his ready smile. He was a man who was caring of others, generous with his talents, and highly principled. To know him was to know the best of what humans might be. There is solace; As John Donne wrote in his 17th Meditation: "all mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated; God employs several translators; . . . God's hand is in every translation, and his hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again" I shall miss him though . . . C. Donald Weinberg

First, I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to the family of Master Massaroni and his mentor Master Gordon. I am still in complete shock and cannot believe that he was taken away from us so soon. This sad news brought a tear to my eye. My relationship with Rob began when we were fierce competitors and very much involved in a rivalry. Even with that said, I always had a deep respect for him as a martial artist. His competitive nature inspired me and everyone around me to train at a high level. When we were invited to the Master's Clinic together and were phased out of the tournament scene, we became really good friends. Then, my respect for him as person grew to a whole new level. Over the last four years we experienced many ups and downs in our effort to make the Master's rank. He always had my back, and I had his. He was one of those people that you could not help but to look forward to seeing at events. After this year's test, all I could think about was how much more I was going to enjoy the promotion knowing that he would be right next to me. The world has lost a great individual that inspired so many people in so many ways. I want the Massaroni family to know that they are in my thoughts and prayers. I miss you Rob and will never forget you. I know that your positive influence of other people will continue to be seen. Tang Soo!!! Donte' Davis #24036

I had Mr. Mass as a teacher 2 years ago. He is by far my favorite teacher ever. When I first heard he died on MYSPACE, I thought it was a dumb joke, but when I saw it on tv I was shocked. He never was in a bad mood. He was always happy. He taught me sooo many things in math(he used to teach 7th grade math). RIP.

I had Mr. Massaroni as a math teacher when my teacher Mr. Schwartz died of cancer. This was so long ago because I graduated from high school last year. He was nice and a very good teacher. I remember he always had Orange Juice and I would always ask for a sip it was our joke everyday. My sister Natala and my neighbor Dalton ran the race with him. He will be missed greatly! ~Stephanie Smith

I attended today's memorial from 4 to 6 at the studio today for Master Massaroni. I did not bing my son who is a student there, as he is still trying to grasp the fact that Mr Mass will not be there (physically) anymore to teach and guide him. It was odd - I stood there listening to the gathered speaking fondly of their fallen friend, teacher, brother, son, mentor...then I was reliving April 24,2007. And back against the far wall...I could hear and see Mr Mass getting into position and holding the board for when my son would lift his leg up and then bring it down in an axe kick....breaking the board. And then I heard Mr Mass say 'Awesome!' and slap his hand. My son's face so bright,,, so pleased that he was able to do it and have Mr Mass there to be a part of it. ........And then I was back at the memorial; thinkng I will NEVER understand why he passed so young. What I do know is that he touched everyone he met - and inspired more people than most of us do in a lifetime. My thoughts are with his wife and family and with Master Gordon and his family.

I sat in shock, disbelief, as I typed the power point in tribute to Rob from hotel room in Singapore. The typing was interrupted by unconrtollable crying to laughing at myself for crying. I had the honor of watching Rob from the beginning; a chunky little boy who lacked self-confidence and self-esteem to a proud and graceful Champion who stood tall among all men. A man who was dominated by a positive attitude; a man who spent his life helping others; a man who spent a lifetime improving himself. He was a student above most students, a competitor above most competitors, a teacher above most teachers, a family man above most family men. In a life that for many of us lacks balance he pursued it; personally, religiously and professionally. He was more of a man at 29 than most men will ever be. He has affected more lives than most ever will. He was a Master of Tang Soo Do; more importantly he was a Master of Life. I sat in our Dojang last night. It was full of parents, full of our students both present and past, attended by Masters though none were formally invited. We sat, we shared and we cryed and mourned our loss together. Some questioned whether the school would continue without him. Would the school that under his tutilege and was known for its excellence survive wihout him? The answer was very clear in my mind -I knew it would - because of him! The greatest joy in Tang Soo Do for me was watching students I trained with and trained reach the ultimate goal of our art: Master. I have had this honor perhaps more than I deserve: Master Fisher, Master Di Pietro, Master Castelli and Master Massaroni. Master Massaroni will no longer be amongst us physically. His memories and spirit will be a part of me forever. I see his flame burning bright by the many candles he has lit. His flame burns in each of you that has had the honor to be known as his students, his family and his friends. As you live your life, in and out of the dojang, know that part of him is in you and make him proud of your actions. Learn from this tragedy that tomorrow is promised to no one! Live your life like there is no tomorrow. Live your life like he lived his; striving for excelllence and carrying as many people as he could on that road with him. I love you Rob and pray there is a heaven. Rest in peace my son. SBN

As with all of you, Stefan and I were shocked by the sad news. Rob was larger than life. Everything he did, he did well and he made the accomplishments he achieved seem easily attainable. It is hard to fathom this sudden loss and my heartfelt sympathies to everyone, especially the Massaroni and Gordon families. May you find solace in knowing that Rob touched so many lives because of you.

I think it was on my first date with my wife, 20 years ago, that I learned she had a brown belt in karate, and that even though she no longer actively practiced, karate was not only a huge part of her identity and a source of great personal pride, but also a strong bond she shared with her father, who encouraged her all the way in her training. For many years, we dreamed of having a son, and of the day when we would take him to learn karate, too. Seven years ago, the little boy came, and two years ago, my wife came home, incredibly excited, saying she had just found the most wonderful young man to teach our son karate. As I soon found out, that was an understatement. She had just found the most wonderful young man to beam self-confidence and pride and fine values and optimism as a way of being into our son's heart. Never mind the forms and the levels in the wrapper of martial arts, we all came to adore Mr. Mass, and we knew he was teaching life and a faith he loved and lived and was giving to the children -- and to us parents, as well. We were his students, too. Watching my son train and grow in self-esteem and confidence, I often said a silent prayer of thanks that he had this fine man, much younger, more athletic, and more energetic than myself, to look up to. And sometimes I found myself thinking how much I'd like to be like Mr. Mass, myself, except that I can never be a young man again, and I never knew how to touch lives so beautifully when I was 29. Perhaps some day, by his example, I can learn. Old men have their heroes, too, you know. My son, my wife, and I have all shared tears this week. Losing Mr. Mass was like a death in the family. We've got a hunch, though, that somewhere there's a heaven, for where else could such a soul go? And in a play on words this day of the mass for Mr. Mass, we've all been taught that mass disappearing becomes energy and light. The day all the papers lit up with the story of his death, I couldn't help noticing another article off in the margins about NASA's announcement of the most powerful explosion of light ever seen in our universe -- off in a galaxy far, far away, so to speak. Coincidence? Sign? None of us can know. But if there's a particle shower striking earth just about now, or any time soon, that has astronomers wondering at a haunting whisper in the passing sounds of static, odds are good that the whisper says "Tang Soo!" Thank you for gracing our lives these past two years, Mr. Mass. And from all of us, God bless you. Tang Soo, Sir! Goodbye. -- Rick, Joyce, and David Booth

Words cannot begin to explain what Rob has left behind as his legacy or all the tremendous things he did while he was with us. As I sat in the church today, it was truley amazing to see how many people's lives he touched. Rob was the most humble of champions along with a great teacher and leader. It was just a few weeks ago that I was standing next to him while he tested for his Master's belt. This belt is something Rob has always worn in his heart and showed by his actions long before the day of our test. Although Rob will not physically be there the day he would have been standing in front of his grandmaster to receive his belt, he will be in the minds of everyone at that event most especially mine as I will be thinking of my friend that should be standing next to me and will be in my heart and mind. My heart goes out to his wife, family and friends. Tang Soo!!! RIP.. We will always remember you!! Rick Harsche, Elite Martial Arts Institute

Although we are not students at Black Belt Academy. We have been fortunate enough to have had numerous encounters with Master Massaroni. Being Students at KMAI PENNDEL, and attending numerous competitions we were able to witness what a phennominal Martial artist Master Massaroni was. Also, we are grateful to him for attending Snyder Middle School on Cultural Day May 4th, where he seemed to work his miracles with the children there. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and immediate family as well as his extended family at Black Belt Academy and Schafer Middle School. God Bless You Master Massaroni! Yesterday's mass was a beautiful tribute to Mr. Mass' life. I still am not sure if my little guy really understands what's happened. He was concerned - would Mr. White be ok? I've tried to explain as best I could to a six year old. He'll return to school on Monday. I also really want to say something to Jesse. Your comments broke my heart that you didn't know if you could return to train in the studio. We have never spoken to each other. I am just a mom watching her baby train every week but I have frequently thought that I can see a lot of Mr. Mass' influence in how you work with the kids. I can't believe you are so young but I can see his spark in you. Mr. Mass' passing is so hard to understand but I know that I want to be a better person because of him. Jess, if any good comes from this, maybe we'll all work to be more like Mr. Mass and I hope you don't extinguish that spark he lit in you ... I hope you stay and continue to work with the kids and pass on the flame!

I was shocked to hear the sad news of Master Massaroni's passing. My condolences go out to his Family and those he shared his life with, may God bless them with strength through this difficult time. I have only seen him a few months ago at the Masters Clinic, travelling together many times from Phildelphia to Alabama we always had a great time, he was ALWAYS smiling and laughing. Especially one occasion this year, I was lucky enough to share the car journey from the Masters seminar venue back to the hotel with Rob, Master Carter, Master Louie, Cathy and Master Gordon. This ten minute journey will remain with me forever, Master Rob and I joked and laughed with the other guys all the way, not one dull moment with him present. As a martial artist he was the best of the best as well as an all round great human being and was a great inspiration to many of the Great Britain team members. God always seems to take the good people first and our loss is His gain. You will be greatly missed but NEVER forgotten. Tang Soo Master Khan and Family

I Am Always With You When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do, You mustn't tie yourself to me with too many tears, But be thankful we had so many good years. I gave you my love, and you can only guess How much you've given me in happiness. I thank you for the love that you have shown, But now it is time I traveled on alone. So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must Then let your grief be comforted by trust That it is only for a while that we must part, So treasure the memories within your heart. I won't be far away for life goes on. And if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I will be near And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear All my love around you soft and clear And then, when you come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and a "Welcome Home". Unknown He will live on in our thoughts and hearts We will miss you Rob

I ran the Broad Street this year and I finished slightly ahead of Mr. Massaroni. I remember the paramedics making way with the gurney and my immediate thought was that the man was dehydrated or something similar that runners tend to suffer. I PRAY THAT WHEN THEY STEP ON THAT FLOOR THAT SOMEHOW THE SORROW WILL BE IMPOWERED BY HIS SPIRIT AND WHEN THEY CALL OUT, THAT THEY CALL TO THE HEAVENS TO LET THEIR INSPIRATION HEAR THAT THEY CONTINUE ON FOR HIM, WITH HIM, BECAUSE OF HIM - TAKING THE NEXT STEP, AS PAINFUL AS IT IS TO BECOME MORE LIKE HIM. I was deeply saddened by the news of Master Massaroni’s untimely passing. I did not personally know Mr. Mass, but I do remember seeing him at my first World Tang Soo Do Championship back in 2002. Even then, I noticed that he had an uncommon charisma and presence and he was always smiling. Winning the Men’s Grand Champion trophy further confirmed for me that he was a special person with a great attitude. All of my experiences at my first World Championship made me realize just how special the World Tang Soo Do Association is to its members and families. Now that I read all of the wonderful tributes to Mr. Mass, I understand why the Brotherhood of the WTSDA is so important and so very strong. We all support each other, we all want the best for each other and we grieve especially for those that were closest to him. I feel your loss and I see the strength that will ultimately be gained by all who were touched by Mr. Mass. He inspired and encouraged so many of you, and I believe that you will all continue his legacy of making the world a kinder and more enjoyable place to be. Rest in Peace, Mr. Mass, for you certainly made your mark in this world! My sincere condolences to his wife, family, students and Tang Soo Do brothers and sisters. ~ Kim Dauplaise, Costa’s Tang Soo Do

When we pass and are judged by our creator and our values to humanity is assessed, it is not our material worth that will weigh in our favor nor is it the obedience we commanded from others or the fear in the minds of our enemies. Rather it is the spirits we have lifted, the minds we have inspired, the love we have shared, the loyalty of our friends and the respect of our adversaries that will determine our value.

In reading these thoughts and comments it is clear that the value of Rob’s life is truly priceless. He touched so many souls and left behind
